What are some of the ways in which girls compare themselves?
We tend to compete with each other at school and also by constantly comparing our looks: mostly our bodies or faces.
Why do you think girls bring each other down?
I think girls bring each other down because society holds a lot of different standards that we think we have to meet.
Can you share some of the mean things other girls have said to you?
Other girls have told me that I’m not good enough or that I’m fat. Mostly things about my physical appearance. It got to the point where my own self-confidence was being lowered because I was comparing myself to others all the time instead of just focusing on myself.
How did it make you feel?
It always made me feel like I wasn’t good enough or that I was never going to be good enough.
What did you do to overcome these negative comments?
Just continually working and focusing on myself!
How can girls better support each other?
To better support each other girls can just lift each other up and be genuinely nice to each other.
Can you talk about a moment where you felt support from other girls?
There are some days when I’m feeling down, and even if it’s a random girl passing me in the hallway giving me a compliment, it helps lift me up. I’ve also had really supportive friends who just help me support the good instead of focusing on the bad.
What would your advice be to other girls right now?
If other girls are reading this, I would say to just focus on yourself. Work on being the best that you can be instead of focusing on other people and how they are doing.
