Sixteen-year-old Lily-Rose Depp is taking the world by storm. Daughter of singer Vanessa Paradis and actor Johnny Depp, Lily-Rose is definitely the it-girl to watch out for. Her first movie, Yoga Hosers, premiered at Sundance Film Festival this year and she has another two upcoming films we literally can’t wait for. Lily-Rose is taking on more than just acting as the fashion world has also fallen head over heels in love with her and oh, so have we.
On what Karl Lagerfeld is really like
This girl has loved Chanel since she was a baby and would wear her mom’s Chanel pumps. So it’s fitting that Karl Lagerfeld has picked her up as one of his muses. She’s known him since she was 8 years old and says, “He makes people feel great. He is a presence. He’s very perceptive; I really feel like he understands people.”
On what it’s like to be an actress
We know acting isn’t all glitz and glam, but Lily lives for it. She says there are moments that let her feel like she’s someone else. “When you are in the character so fully, it’s the best feeling ever. I so love it. Even if those moments come just once a day or every other day, they are just worth it.”
On her upcoming breakout movie
Yoga Hosers is a horror comedy spin-off from Kevin Smith’s horror film “Tusk”. The quirky film takes place in a Manitoba convenience store where we meet Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp) and Colleen Mckenzie (Harley Quinn Smith) who are both working the after-school shift. Along with a man-hunter from Québec, the girls join forces to defeat an army of little monsters called the Bratzis (little Nazis made out of bratwursts).
On how the movie came to be
Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp have been besties IRL since they were kids. So when Harley was playing a small role in her dad’s film “Tusk”, alongside Lily-Rose’s dad Johnny Depp, it was only natural for her to ask Lily-Rose be her co-star. Lily-Rose said “I was like “What?” First, I didn’t think my parents were going to let me because they’ve always kept me out of the spotlight, which I am so grateful for, but I’m so glad that they did.” The two stole the movie in that one scene, playing Girl Clerk 1 and 2, that now they’re starring in their own spin-off movie.
On having a band
Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose have been friends since they were just 5 years old. When they were six they had a band together, where they wrote one song. The band was called “Pink Elephant” and the song was called “Elephant Love.” The band ended when Lily-Rose went to Paris for a few months. Lily-Rose called Harley and said, “I don’t know if I can be in the band because I’m stuck here in France for, like, six months.” I was six years old and like, “I think we need to have a serious conversation about this.” What cuties!
On social media
Lily-Rose Depp has been on social media since she was 12, but has always used private accounts (the only one you can follow is her public Instagram). People would make fake ones pretending to be her, and she was always afraid someone would say something that isn’t true. Lily-Rose Depp likes to use social media to control her own image, but does say she’d be much less stressed without it. “I am constantly afraid of getting hacked. It’s like being afraid of stepping on glass.”
On what her dad really thinks about her budding career
Don’t think that just because her parents are superstars they want to push their daughter into the spotlight too. Johnny Depp didn’t expect to see her become famous at such a young age, and still wants to keep an eye out for her. “No matter how grown up she gets, I’ll never stop worrying about her. It’s a father-daughter thing. She’s got a sensible head on her shoulders, and I trust her to lead a sensible, responsible life, but I can’t ever see the day coming when I just switch off to let her make her own way in the world”.
On being a teenager and a star at the same time
She might be an up-and-coming celebrity but that doesn’t mean she wants to grow up too fast. “The only movies I want to do are the ones I’m passionate about. I care about school, and I’m still a kid. I want to live like that while I can.”
