Here are 11 things you need to know about Birdy
On where her nickname comes from
Birdy isn’t just a stage name. When she was a baby she would open her mouth really wide when her parents would feed her so they started calling her Birdy. It’s been her nickname ever since.
On how she started her career
Music is in her blood. She started writing her own songs when she was only 8 years old. Her mom is a classical pianist so she learned to play classical music at a young age. Birdy says that being classically trained has had a big influence on her work.
On her big break
You have probably heard Birdy’s cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love”. She decided to make the cover after her aunt sent her a link to the original on YouTube. She had a good feeling about her cover so sent it to BBC Radio 1 where it was picked up and a star was born.
On being young and successful
It’s probably hard balancing a double life as a teenager and being an up-and-coming superstar. Birdy is constantly around people who are older than her but says “I don’t ever feel a lot younger than them, which is nice. They feel like my friends.” And as for her friends back home, Birdy says “I feel the same age as them, which is nice.”
On meeting Ed Sheeran
She was speechless. Birdy admits she was “kind of shy.” Girl, we would be too!
On her first song
They can’t all be viral YouTube sensations. Birdy jokes that her first song didn’t really make sense but when she sang it, it felt right. She says, “It was called something like ‘Shadow On the Floor.’ [Laughs.] It was really sad and heartbreaking.”
Birdy says her heart has never been broken in the traditional romantic sense. But she has experienced other kinds, saying “Sometimes, it’s not always romantic love. It can be between friends or family having an argument.”

She had to put school on hold to be able to focus more on her music. She admits that she misses school but still feels it was the right choice.

She wants to visit Japan.

This girl has done a lot more than YouTube covers. So far in her short career she has written and recorded a song for “The Hunger Games”, “Brave”, and “The Fault In Our Stars”. She says her song “Just a Game” from “The Hunger Games” was for when Katniss was wondering whether or not she could trust Peta.
