It’s International Women’s Day today and what better way to celebrate than be inspired by these 5 girls who have impacted us and are true leaders.
Have you ever had an awesome idea but thought you were too young to actually make it happen? Well we have some news for you: you are NEVER too young to pursue your dreams. Here are five fearless girls who each had an idea then brought them to life. Get inspired by the following stories from these awesome young female entrepreneurs.
Tavi Gevinson – Rookie Magazine
How it started: At only 12 years old Tavi started a fashion blog called Style Rookie. She quickly rose to fame but by age 15 she knew she wanted to shift her focus from fashion to pop culture and feminist discussion. She has since published books, taken up acting and is the editor-in-chief of the online Rookie Magazine.
Big moment: Her parents didn’t take her blog seriously until the New York Times interviewed her for an article about young bloggers. Since then she has been named one of “The 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014” by Time Magazine and has appeared in the “Forbes 30 Under 30” media list.

Catherine Cook – myYearbook
How it started: In 2005, when she was only 15 years old, Catherine was flipping through a yearbook with her 17-year-old brother. They started talking about what it would be like to create an interactive version and the social media site myYearbook was born. Catherine’s oldest brother Geoff agreed to come home from Harvard and be CEO, and the family has been growing myYearbook ever since.
Big moment: myYearbook has grown to be one of the 25 most-trafficked websites. They merged with Quepasa, a company that runs social networking sites aimed at Latinos, in a $100 million dollar deal, and soon after changed the service’s name to MeetMe.
Don’t think you can’t make a social media site just because the industry is dominated by Facebook. Catherine says, “[Our site is] specifically for high school students, and we really listen to the suggestions of our members.”
Vivienne Harr – Make a Stand
How it started: An 11-year-old Vivienne saw a photo of two boys carrying heavy stones down a mountain. When she found out the boys were slaves she knew she had to do something. She started selling lemonade outside her house to make money to give to organizations fighting child slavery.
Big moment: She went to her lemonade stand every day and as people found out about her mission it got increasingly busy. Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg invited her to sell lemonade in Times Square where she raised $101,320. She is now turning her lemonade stand into a full business, Make a Stand, with the help of her father. Five percent of all sales will go towards her cause.
Vivienne believes that the optimism that comes with being a kid was key to her success. “Kids don’t see a lot of the obstacles in the world.”
Alexis Wolfer – The Beauty Bean
How it started: Alexis was concerned with how beauty magazines and websites placed a lot of focus on unrealistic body ideals and weight. This inspired her to start her own online beauty guide. She wants to provide women with glamorous beauty content and equally focus on inner beauty and health.
Big moment: When Alexis launched The Beauty Bean, she had a contest that asked readers to share what they liked about the site. Eighty-five percent of them said it made them feel better about themselves.

Juliette Brindak – MissOandFriends.com
How it started: On the way home from a family vacation, Juliette drew characters for five friends. She was only 10 years old. By 16 she had started a social networking site for teenage girls named after one of the characters she drew, Miss O and Friends. The site is by girls for girls and offers a little bit of everything for everyone, whether it’s playing games, getting advice or writing stories.
Big moment: The Miss O characters offer positive role models for growing girls and have been featured in a series of books. Over 120,000 copies of the books have been sold.
